The Watcher
I found this old tanker (presumably for irrigating the surrounding fields of crops) on a run during COVID-19 lockdown. I made a mental note to come back in the early hours after lockdown when I knew the Milky Way would rise just behind it.
Climbing up onto it was made easier by a ladder and very little wind this night- the harder part was staying perfectly still for 1 minute to take the photo.
The purple regions could just be seen with the naked eye as slightly pink points of light- these are emission nebulae, where new stars form. Watching the one hundred thousand light years of Milky Way stretched over my head, I felt very small.
Thank you!
How this photo was taken
The location this photo was taken is displayed on the map.
This was a stacked photograph of around 30 minutes exposure using a 35mm lens and tripod on the 16th of May 2020. I walked up the hill onto salisbury plain from about 1:30am to 3am to watch the Milky Way rise.
